Jessica Alba's Style Evolution: 'I Was Being Objectified, I Wanted To Be Chic And Elegant!'

Theres a lot to be learnt from Jessica Alba. She first came into our lives back in 2000 as the star of telly series Dark Angel before taking to the silver screen in Honey followed by a sultry appearance in Sin City (who could forget those leather chaps, cowgirl hat and toned abs?). At the time, the actress was mostly memorable for her super-hot face and that super-hot bod but she soon showed us...

'I wanted to be chic and elegant!'

Because these days, a week rarely goes by when us Graziettes arent swooning over an Alba red carpet appearance, coveting her extensive sunglasses wardrobe or learning from her crayon-coloured jean masterclass. Who better to sum it up than Donatella Versace who says, She always looks fresh, never vulgar. Indeed.

Jessica is often spotted tro! tting ar ound the sunny streets of LA with her hubby and adorable daughters, proving that shes the ultimate yummy mummy. And lets not forget all that charity work Jess does in her spare time from campaigning to save the great white shark, working to educate children in Africa and participating in the Revlon Walk For Women. Way to go, missy!

'I felt like I was being objectified, and it made me uncomfortable'.

So its fair to say that Jessica has officially made the transition from sex bomb to bona fide fashion icon but, as the actress explains to Marie Claire, it was no easy feat. I had a show [Dark Angel] that premiered when I was 19, she explains. And right away, everyone formed a strong opinion about me because of the way I was marketed. I was supposed to be sexy, this tough action girl. That's what people expected. I felt like I was being objectified, and it made me uncomfortable. I wanted to be chic and elegant!' And looking back at retro snaps of the star [above], it's clear her style has come on leaps and bounds. And thank the! Lord fo r that!

'I dress for myself.'

Now that I'm older, I've learned how to own it, but I'm still not very overt, La Alba says of her style. There are some women who dress for men. I dress for myself. It took me some time to get here. Being a mom and feeling grown-up have helped. Now if I'm going to wear something short, it has to have a high neck or a little sci-fi toughness to it, an edge. Oh, how we love to see the making of a fashion icon and now that Jessica's found her sartorial footing, here's hoping the chicness will continue...
